Contrary to expectations Winter time is always busy on the farm. Keeping on top of our fruit requirements means that we spend early Winter removing unproductive fruit bushes and plants, and planting new varieties to ensure a successful summer (weather permitting!) for next year. We have already planted out in excess of 8000 strawberry plants this month and have a similar amount to plant out in the new year.
In addition we have all those maintenance jobs that never get done in the rest of the year. Digging out ditches, giving our tractors and other equipment a full service, and mending broken fences are just a few of the tasks we have ahead of us.
One of the more pleasurable jobs in recent week – not least because it is an indoor task which is always a bonus at this time of year- has been preparing our “Fabulously Fruity” fruit wine bottles for our Christmas orders. To get everyone in the festive mood our lovely 750ml bottles are now sporting a tinsel necklace, and a bespoke gift label.
We started out thinking we would need perhaps 200 bottles dressing up for the occasion, but the orders just kept coming in. Over a two week period we ended up decorating in excess of 500 bottles for our advance Christmas orders (have a look at the attached photograph to get an idea of the scale of the undertaking). Needless to say we are delighted but are now avoiding tinsel for the next few weeks!
All these advance orders have now been dispatched so we are now concentrating on our Christmas fruit wine gift packs ready for our Christmas Fayre on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 November , and the Lincolnshire Food and Gift Fayre on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November 2014. See page 31 of the Good Taste magazine published by Select Lincolnshire for more details.
