As we get into the month of September you can usually feel the onset of autumn. Nights slowly start drawing in and you can start to feel a slight nip in the air in the mornings. At the moment there looks like no sign of an ‘Indian summer’, the very unsettled windy and showery weather we are currently experiencing at Peaks Top Farm looks set to continue to the middle of the month.
Despite this we are still picking some very nice late season brambles and raspberries which are going to be stored and go into making some delicious Fabulously Fruity wine. The apples and plums in our orchard are just about ripe. It looks like we will have another good crop this year and I just hope the strong wind forecast this week doesn’t knock too many of them off the trees!
Although the main soft fruit harvest has only just finished, we are busy making plans for 2018. We have a continuous replanting policy of our fruit crops on the farm, but we are noticing an increase in demand for people who want to come directly to the farm for their ready picked and pick your own fruit so we will be planting additional land this autumn as well. This is perhaps also due to fewer farms actually doing PYO nowadays. In our position near Grimsby and Cleethorpes in North East Lincolnshire we want to make sure more and more people can come and enjoy our fruit when in season.
Over the next 3 weeks we have a really busy programme of events with our Fabulously Fruit Wine.
Saturday 16th September is the Castle Hill, Lincoln Farmers Market. This month it coincides with the food festival being held at Lincoln Castle so it should be a great day.
Sunday 17th September we are at the Cottingham Food Festival in East Yorkshire. This is a very nice food festival held in the middle of Cottingham town centre, with lots of local products from Northern Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.
Saturday 23rd September is the Brigg Farmers market. Again held through the town centre and you can get all your food and drink shopping directly from the farmers who produce it.
Saturday 30th September is the Southwell Ploughing Match and Show, this year held in Kirklington, Notts. This is a wonderful show encompassing everything agricultural, shopping plus food and drink. We will be in the Farmers Pantry area with our full range of Fruit wine.
Sunday 1st October is the annual Beverley Food Festival. The festival is organised by the town council and is one of the best purely food events we go to. The location through the market area in Beverley, the choice and variety of stalls is second to none. It is certainly worth a visit for an ‘foodie’ day out.
Remember that we are open every Saturday at Peaks Top Farm from 12-4pm for wine tasting and sales from our winery shop. Feel free to call in to have a chat about what we do on the farm, how are wine is made and free tasting of our delicious wine.
